The TM506 has a glossy face and the back is matte black. The clamshell phone looks a touch professional but definitely can be taken out at nights. Fingerprints do not get imprinted on the shiny surface so the phone maintains a clean appearance. The top side of the phone has a strap holder and just below it is the volume rocker. A touch of this button can bring back light on the monochrome external display. The inside of the phone looks pretty sleek. The ear speaker is at the top of the screen and the rest of the keys are on the bottom half of the phone. The two selection keys are on either side of the circular navigation key. Dialing is very easy on this sensitive keypad.
The shortcut key is below the call key in the left and provides access to Camera, Bluetooth, Alarm, and Main Menu or creates a New Shortcut. On the right side, there is the Clear key below the End key. There is a separate on and off key in the TM506 and the key in the pad has a unique circular design.
Camera
The TM506 has a 2 mega pixel camera which comes with 2.5x zoom and a camcorder. At the top of the camera mode screen, the graphics will clearly show whether it is set to video or photo mode. The left and right keys of the navigation key can be used to toggle between the two modes. The different camera settings include zoom, self-timer, different shutter sounds white balance, and night mode.
There is also the panorama tool that allows you to take three photos to merge into one and a ‘burst’ option that can take a series of four photos. The TM506 also has a PhotoDJ which is used to change brightness, color balance, contrast and to create various other effects. Photo Fix is an in–built feature that helps in enhancing the picture quality. The main plus point, though, is the USB cable which allows you to directly print pictures from the phone.
Basic Features
The basic features of the TM506 would include a calendar, stop watch, caller id, alarm clock, voice memo, speaker phone, notepad, calculator, timer, password saver, text messaging and MMS, and MusicDJ to compose ring tones. Apart from this there is an integrated GPS which provides voice-based and text based directions. The cell comes with a Li – Ion Battery which is rated for 270 minutes of talk time.
Audio
The TM506 is not a walkman phone but still it is highly regarded for its audio capabilities. The speaker on the back of the phone produces a loud volume at the highest setting. The handset has RDS radio and plays digital audio formats like MP3, MP4 AAC, AAC+, Eaac+, WMA and WAV files. The additional features would include play list, shuffle, repeat modes and an equalizer with Sony’s Mega Bass. All these functions can be accessed from the Music icon of the main menu.
Flight Mode will allow the user to listen to their favorite music with network and radio transceivers switched off. All the music applications can also be accessed from the Media icon on the Main menu.
Messaging
The TM506 will help you to keep in touch through text messaging, instant messaging and web email. The keypad has a flush design which helps to type messages easily with almost zero errors. The Main Menu has dedicated icons for IM and email and messaging. The Sony Ericsson phone supports instant messaging from Yahoo, AOL, Google and Windows Live. You can also check your emails from the phone (POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP). So no more worries for missing out on an important email while you are on the move.
The text messaging feature allows you to send ordinary text messages, picture messages and voice messages.
Internet and Connectivity
TM506 supports T – Mobile’s HSDPA network which allows faster download speeds. The upload and download speed is faster than what it can achieve on an EDGE network.
The inbuilt memory of the phone is 32 MB but is expandable with Memory Stick Micro. This is useful incase you want to store lots of images or videos. The memory slot is located on the upper left side of the phone which facilitates inserting of Memory Stick without switching off the phone.
The USB port is there to transfer files from or to the computer. When connected directly to the printer it can print pictures directly from the phone. The Bluetooth v2.0 will enable the user to connect a Bluetooth headset.
