Product description
Voice Quality
On the whole, the Motorola Clutch i465 offers good voice quality. Calls come in loud and clear, and as you might expect from iDEN models, the speakerphone is just screaming even at the noisiest of surroundings. More importantly, callers will be pleased with the sound quality on this phone.
As far as the Direct Connect feature is concerned, it performs well on international calls as well, despite a slightly longer call setup time. Sometimes, if you’re used to connecting on the fly – as in a sec or so – anything over that may sound tardy. Despite all this, there is no drop in the quality of the calls and Direct Connect service complements the Clutch impressively.
As is expected of iDEN models, the Battery life on this bad boy is not so good, and the Clutch follows suit. The 3.4 hours of talk time specified on the package is a good bit less than the industry standard of 5.5 hours. If you apply commonsense, this also leaves the Standby time lower than average as well – to a mere 4 days. Another factor on the Cons side is that the Clutch comes in a low-resolution display and the interface is a bit clunky at best. What’s more? With Clutch, there’s no option for instant messaging.
Design
Another neat aspect about the Clutch is that it has a ‘fantastically’ compact design. The i465 Clutch is on the small side at 4.4 in x 0.6 in x 2.1 in when you consider the fact that it is a QWERTY. Nonetheless the Candy Bar design more than makes up for this flaw. It looks slightly boxy, although the tapered edges gives a hip and sleek look and the color red definitively goes with the bold Motorola Clutch. It also feels really comfortable to the hand – that counts a lot for most users. The Clutch also comes with specs according to military standards for vibration, dust, shock and you guessed it – solar radiation. Even the battery cover on the Clutch i465 has a textured feel.
Features
The 600-contact phonebook is welcomed by networkers in the business arena. More than that, each entry allows for up to seven phone numbers. You can even add email and notes if you like – the phone has great organizing utilities. You can categorize your contacts via groups, PTT Talk Groups, and by merging them in any one of 12 polyphonic ringtones. With Push-to-Talk functionality, you can connect to as many as 20 Nextel Direct Connect users almost instantly using a Walkie-Talkie Style connection.
Other regular features include a datebook, a speakerphone, a memo pad, call timers, Bluetooth, a voice memo recorder, and vibrate mode. Multimedia and Text features are highlighted on the Clutch. Additionally, the Clutch i465 Red also offers support for POP3 email accounts.
Special Features
The VGA camera on the Clutch uses five resolutions to take pictures – all the way from 160x128 to 640x480 pixels. You also have a few editing options with two quality settings, self-timer, brightness control, shutter sounds (2), and a 4 x zoom. You can also take clips for 16 seconds for multimedia messages and take longer videos in the standard setting. You also have about 20MB shared memory for saving your photos and videos.
You can get more out of the Clutch via a wireless Web browser – the phone supports Java. The i465 is Mobile Web Browsing enabled and you can surf the Web with OpenWave Browser v7.0x. The Clutch is also Data Capable, which means it may be used as a Modem. With GPS Services Support, integrated GPS supports Sprint Navigation by enabling Turn-by-turn Directions as well as E911 Locator, a perfect solution for your driving requirements.
All said and done, the Motorola i465 is a decent phone, considering its ease of use and that it’s sized conveniently to slip into any pocket. The best part is that is made with Mil Spec construction, this is a mean rugged phone that can survive a safari, let alone the rigors of a daily routine. Coming to the keys on the Clutch, they tend to be pretty small. Nonetheless, the QWERTY does make itself usable to say the least.
The Clutch deserves applause for being a low-end cell phone geared for the young texting crowd and performing so well. The Motorola Clutch scores with its easy-to-use design and excellent performance.
